ŌTANI SHIRŌ 大谷司朗 (B.1936) A Shigaraki-Ware Jar Showa (1926-1989) or Heisei (1989-2019) era, late 20th/early 21st century The stoneware jar with a flat base, almost vertical sides and a roughly hemispherical top section with a narrow mouth, fired on its side resting on shell supports whose impression is visible in the finished work, the side that was uppermost in the kiln covered in greenish-gray ash glaze forming long drips reaching to the other side, the base marked Shi; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed by the artist Shigaraki ryūyū tsubo Shirō (Shigaraki Jar with Flowing Glaze, Shirō), sealed Shirō 9 1/2 x 10 1/2in (25.4x 27.3cm) Footnotes: After undertaking formal training in Kyoto, Ōtani Shirō returned to the ancient ceramic center of Shigaraki and devoted himself to working in the distinctive coarse local clay, flecked with quartz inclusions that burst in the firing process.
