Active in the Tōtōkai, he drew inspiration from mentors Miyagawa Kōzan II and Itaya Hazan before embracing abstraction and stoneware in the 1930s. Postwar, his lyrical, inventive vessels and leadership within Nitten made him a defining force in modern Japanese ceramics.
