KOIE RYŌJI 鯉江良二 (1938-2020) An Oribe-Style Vase Showa (1926-1989) or Heisei (1989-2019) era, late 20th/early 21st century An irregularly formed waisted flower vase with a flat out-turned rim, almost entirely covered in a dark green Oribe-style glaze, abstract striations to the sides, the base stamped and incised in the still-soft clay with capital letters from the Roman alphabet, one side with four impressions left by seashells that supported the vessel in the kiln; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed by the artist, signed Ryō, sealed Ryōji in 8 7/8 x 3 1/2in (22.5 x 8.9cm) Footnotes: Combative, contrarian Koie Ryōji challenged ceramic convention with fiercely individual forms that blur sculpture and vessel. Embracing rupture, humor, and provocation, his work expanded clay's expressive range, asserting ceramics as a site of intellectual risk and artistic freedom.
