TSUJIMURA SHIRŌ 辻村史朗 (B.1947) An Iga Stoneware Hana-ire (Flower Vase) Heisei era (1989-2019), late 20th/early 21st century The ruggedly potted vessel in kinuta form, resembling a wooden mallet for softening fabrics, with two lug handles, the rich ash glaze ranging in color from dark gray to green, the stoneware body with many inclusions, the base with three spur marks; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Iga mimitsuki hanaire Shirō, sealed Shi with another seal, the lid inscribed Iga mimitsuki hanaire Shirō tsukuru with a kaō mark 10 1/4 x 5 3/4in (26 x 14.6cm) Footnotes: Tsujimura Shiro is known for his boldly gestural, wood‑fired stoneware grounded in the Shigaraki and Iga traditions. Self‑taught and independent, he embraces chance, ash, and flame to create powerful, elemental forms that celebrate the raw materiality of clay and express his delight in the unexpected results of the reform process. The kaō inscribed on the lid of the tomobako is that of the 15th generation grand master of the Urasenke school of Japanese tea ceremony, Sen Sōshitsu Hōunsai (1923-2025).
