
KUMAKURA JUNKICHI 熊倉順吉 (1920-1985) An Irabo-yū Tsubo (Jar with Irabo Glaze) Showa era (1929-1986), 20th century The semi-ovoid jar with brownish-yellow sandy-textured glaze having a closed top and with two circular openings on the front and back, below the opening on one side impressed clay in the shape of a dog and the text in Roman letters S.T.S., on the opposite side ENG.CH and in Japanese Rianda Roisusta- shō, sealed Jun adjacent to the base, and a gift inscription on the bottom; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Irabo-yū Tsubo Kumakura Jun and with the artist's seal 9 1/8in (23.2cm) high Footnotes: The text impressed with clay and the inscription on the underside of the lid of the box indicates that the present lot was once potentially made as an award for a yet-unidentified organization. A native of Kyoto, Kumakura Junkichi studied under Fukuda Rikisaburō and the veteran porcelain decorator Tomimoto Kenkichi before abandoning his links with the world of traditional-style Kyoto ceramics in 1957 to join Yagi Kazuo's avant-garde Sōdeisha group. Known for his bold sculptural forms and experimental spirit, he blended traditional clay with modernist abstraction, pushing ceramics beyond function into expressive, architectural shapes.
