
SAKA KŌRAIZAEMON XII 十二世坂高麗左衛門 (1949-2004) A Hagi-Ware Tōsaikei (Colored Landscape) Kōro (Incense Burner), Jitsugetsu ('Sun and Moon') Heisei era (1989-2019), 2004 The globular container resting on three feet, the recessed lid with five openings, all with a delicately crackled pinkish Hagi glaze painted on one side with the rising sun in red and gold and on the other side with the gibbous moon in silver, the base stamped with the artist's mark; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Hagiyaki tōsaikei Jitsugetsuzu kōro Jūnisei Saka Kōraizaemon, sealed Kōraizaemon 5 1/4 x 4 7/8in (13.5 x 12.5cm) including cover Footnotes: The Saka kiln traces its origins to the Korean potter Yi Gyeong, who was brought to Hagi by Mōri Terumoto at the end of the sixteenth century. Beginning with Yi Gyeong as its first master, the kiln served as an official pottery of the Hagi domain alongside the Miwa kiln of Miwa Kyūsetsu. From the second lord, Mōri Tsunahiro, the family received the title Kōraizaemon which was handed down through the generations, passing to the twelfth-generation head in 2004, who tragically died that same year following a domestic accident.
