ATTRIBUTED TO RAKU DŌNYŪ 樂道入(ノンコウ)(NONKŌ, KICHIZAEMON III, 1599-1656) A Black Raku Ware Tea Bowl named Dōniwa Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century The black-glazed earthenware chawan of typical Raku ware form, the body under the glaze finished to a smooth surface with a high and well-defined foot ring, the glaze with spots of dark red throughout, and glaze bubbles of various size; with a later tomobako (wood storage box), the underside of the lid bearing an inscription with the name, signed with a kaō 3 1/4 x 4 3/4in (8.2 x 12cm) Footnotes: The characters of the name of this lot could possibly be the family name of a former owner. They literally mean 'Cave Garden.' The name could also be a reference to the Dongting Lake in China which share the same characters, although the lot's name as written does not contain the character for 'lake.' The kaō associated with the inscription on the lid of the tomobako box appears to correspond with that of the eighth-generation grand master of the Urasenke lineage of tea ceremony, Ittō Sōshitsu (Yūgensai, 1719-71).
