
TAKAHASHI DŌHACHI II 二代高橋(仁阿弥)道八 (NIN'AMI, 1783-1855) A Red Raku Ware Style Tea Bowl Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century The red and black over cream base-glazed chawan in Raku ware style, with low-angled hip and nearly vertical walls, and evidence of having been formed through shaving with carving tools, the foot ring and adjacent area unglazed, signed in the unglazed area [Dō]hachi and sealed Ninsei, with a tomobako (wood storage box) signed Nin'ami and sealed Dōhachi on the lid 3 1/4 x 4 1/2in (8.2 x 11.4cm) Footnotes: The Dōhachi lineage of ceramists, based in Kyoto, was known for its Kyoto-style wares (Kyōyaki), but they also worked in other mediums, such as the present lot. Nin'ami was the second son of the first generation Dōhachi; his works were the subject of an exhibition at the Suntory Museum of Art in 2014-2015.
