
ATTRIBUTED TO RAKU JŌKEI 楽(田中)常慶 (TANAKA, DIED 1635) A Black Raku Ware Tea Bowl named Ashibe (Reedy Shore) Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century The glazed earthenware chawan coated entirely in a graphite-black glaze, with low-slung hip and nearly vertical walls, the bottom of the interior broad and flat, with a later tomobako (wood storage box), the inscription on the underside of the lid bearing the attribution and the name, signed with a kaō 3 1/8 x 4 5/8in (8 x 11.7cm) Footnotes: The kaō associated with the inscription on the lid of the tomobako box appears to correspond with that of the ninth-generation grand master of the Urasenke lineage of tea ceremony, Sekiō Sōshitsu (Fukensai, 1746-1801).
