
RAKU SEINYŪ 樂惺入 (KICHIZAEMON XIII, 1887-1944) A Black Raku Ware Tea Bowl named Kanrai (Winter Thunder) Taisho (1912-26) or Showa (1926-1989) era, first half of the 20th century- The chawan of typical shape for a Raku bowl, mostly covered in lustrous black glaze, the inside of the bowl with a large chadamari divot in the base, the exterior with soft angular impressions carved on the walls in a circle, a swirl carved on the interior of the foot ring, sealed Raku adjacent to the foot ring; with a tomobako (wood storage box) signed Raku Kichizaemon and sealed Raku, an inscription on the underside of the lid bearing the name of the bowl, signed Sa and with a kaō mark 3 1/4 x 4 3/4in (8.2 x 12cm) Footnotes: The kaō on the box lid corresponds with that of the 12th generation grand master of the Omotesenke school of Japanese tea ceremony, Sen Sōsa Seisai (1863-1937).
