
RAKU SEINYŪ 樂惺入 (KICHIZAEMON XIII, 1887-1944) A Raku Ware Ōfuku Chawan (Tea Bowl with Poetic Theme) Showa era (1926-1989), box dated 1935 The vessel with relatively straight walls which slightly angle outwards, a bit more than half of the bowl coated with a cream-colored glaze, the remainer in a creamy-brown glaze, a crane standing on one foot pictured in resist within the brown glaze, the foot ring cut with three notches evenly spaced around the circle, sealed Raku adjacent to the foot ring; with a tomobako (wood storage box) inscribed and signed Ōfuku chawan Raku Kichizaemon kinotoi and sealed Raku 3 1/4 x 4 3/8in (8.2 x 11.1cm) Footnotes: There is a tradition within the modern production of teawares to create utensils which follow the theme of the annual Imperial poetry contest (the contest utakai hajime and the theme chokudai). The theme of the utakai jajime in the year of the wood boar (inscribed as kinotoi on the bowl's box) was Ikebe no tsuru (crane on the pond's edge), which corresponds to the design on the present lot.
