Note Originally appearing in the December 15th, 1946 issue of Vogue, Irving Penn's re-imagining of Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper accompanied the periodical's 'Fables Retold' segment. Various public figures stood in for the characters: Barbara Cushing Mortimer 'Babe' Paley as the Fairy Godmother, Dorothy Parker and Paula Laurence as the Stepsisters, and 15-year-old Carmen Dell'Orefice (in one of her first appearances in Vogue) as Cinderella. Penn artfully staged the familiar narrative on a minimalist set with only a few bold props for context. Prints of Cinderella are exceedingly rare. At the time of this writing it is believed that only one other print of this image has been offered at auction. This print was gifted to the present owners by stage actress and journalist Paula Laurence, the 'stepsister' who appears in the foreground. Lot to be sold without reserve.
