Richard Avedon (1923-2004) Judy Garland in Tramp Costume, 1951 Gelatin silver print; signed in ink on the image, flush-mounted to board, framed. 7 x 9 in. (17.8 x 22.9 cm.) Footnotes: Provenance Judy Garland Estate Auction, Beverley Wilshire Hotel, 27 November 1978; Acquired from the above by the present owners. Note Richard Avedon took this photograph of Judy Garland wearing a tramp costume around the time that she starred in her Broadway show Palace Two-a-Day, which opened at the RKO Palace Theater in New York on 16 October 1951. During its run, she performed her vaudeville-style program for rapt audiences twice each day. Her tramp costume had originally been created for her song-and-dance number 'We're a couple of Swells' that she and Fred Astaire performed in the 1948 film Easter Parade. In the 1950s, this ensemble became a signature costume featured in many of Garland's live performances. Lot to be sold without reserve.
