Title: Carved Wooden Inkwell Depicting the Lion of Lucerne c.1900
Description:
Carved Wooden Inkwell Depicting the Lion of Lucerne, with Brass Liner – Swiss, c.1890–1915
A charming hand-carved wooden inkwell or pen holder, featuring a finely rendered depiction of the Lion Monument of Lucerne (Löwendenkmal), commemorating the Swiss Guards who fell during the storming of the Tuileries Palace in 1792.
The Roman numerals MDCCXCII are carved below the lion, as on the original monument.
Likely carved in the Alpine region of Switzerland around 1890–1915, the piece is made from a pale, lightweight hardwood—probably linden (lime)—with excellent natural patina and age-softened detailing.
It retains its original hand-hammered brass liner, now beautifully mellowed with time.
The carving is in the tradition of Brienz ware, produced as decorative tourist pieces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Honest wear to the base and surface attests to its age and authenticity.
Dimensions: 13 cm wide × 10 cm deep × 9.5 cm tall
A tactile and evocative object with genuine age—ideal for collectors of antique writing accessories, Swiss folk carving, or Grand Tour souvenirs.
