DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER. Cal. 38 Colt. S# 5244. Bbl. 3 1/2". Model 1877 "Lightning" double action revolver mfg. by Colt in 1878. Let side of the bbl. exhibits a faint "COLT D.A. 38" etched panel, with Colt's 2-line address stamped across the top. Left side of the frame is marked with Colt's 3-line patent information, with "38 CAL" marked on the left side of the rear trigger guard web. Metal components exhibit a nickel plated finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece Colt checkered brown hard rubber grips. Interior of right panel is inscribed with an "R". Half-moon blade front sight and frame notched rear sight. Frame, trigger guard, and rear grip strap are matching via "5244" with the cyl. matching via "244". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter dated December 16, 1970 stating: "Caliber 38/ Barrel length 3 1/2"/ Type of stocks Rubber/ Sold and shipped to Spies Kissam & Co./ Address New York, N.Y./ Date of shipment March 21, 1878/ Number of same type guns in shipment 2". CONDITION: metal components retain traces of their original nickel plated finish, with the balance having faded to a gray patina, showing some spots/areas of light pitting and age related discoloration. Relatively bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots and patches of mild pitting and consistent mild pitting at/around the muzzle, while retaining strong rifling throughout. Action does not function, with the cyl. not rotating when hammer is cocked. Hammer and trigger lock up when the trigger is in the forward position. Grips show smoothing and scattered superficial handling marks, but otherwise remain sound. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Norm Greenberg Collection. (01-27684/MLW). ANTIQUE. $400-600.
