A MODEL OF A PIGSTY Han dynasty 32.0cm H x 43.0cm W x 31.0cm D approx. (4). Footnotes: Provenance: Private collection, Sydney, acquired in Hong Kong circa 2000 Larry Lucas, Sydney Private collection, Sydney 漢 陶溷 傳承: 悉尼私人收藏,約2000年前後購於香港 悉尼 Larry Lucas 悉尼私人收藏 Compare with a closely related Han dynasty model of a pigsty, see Minneapolis Institute of Art, acc.no.95.118.1a-l. The archaic Chinese character for 'toilet', 溷 (hun), is pictographic in origin, depicting a pig housed beside flowing water. This reflects the longstanding practice of combining pigsties with latrines, an arrangement that could still be observed in parts of rural China even today.
