1892 DATED ENGLISH SILVER PRESENTATION TROWEL & ANOTHER. Comprising a large and finely crafted sterling silver and -handled presentation trowel. The pointed trowel blade with scalloped base, heavily and finely engraved borders, and substantial acanthus-form neck with leaf-tip banded collar, set in a substantial carved handle. The blade with dedicatory engraved inscription in various font styles reading, "Presented to H.H. Bemrose, Esq. J.P. on the occasion of laying the Foundation Stone of St. Thomas Vicarage Derby November 5, 1892." Hallmarked London with maker's mark HW for noted London silversmith Horace Woodward. Length 13.8 inches (35.05cm). Total weight 315 grams. In excellent condition. The church of St. Thomas still stands and is located on Peartree Road, Derby. Lot accompanied by a copy of a newspaper clipping from the Nottingham Daily Guardian, November 7, 1892, reporting the laying of the foundation stone by Bemrose. Together with another presentation trowel in silver plate, the blade also heavily engraved, "Presented to Mrs. W. Baker on the occasion of her laying a Memorial Stone of Wesleyan Chapel North Warnborough June 6, 1895," set on an handle. Otherwise unmarked. Length 12.25 inches (31.12cm). The recipient of the silver trowel was Sir Henry Howe Bemrose (1827 - 1911). Bemrose and his brother William became partners in his father's printing firm in Derby in 1858. He took over as chairman of the family firm of William Bemrose & Sons, printers of Derby and London and was a director of Parr's Derby Bank. He was active in many walks of public life, including the church and charitable organizations. After serving as Mayor of Derby in 1877-1878, he became Member of Parliament for Derby from 1895 to 1900. He was knighted in the year 1897.
