Concerned about matching drawing for drawing, Giacometti took the notebook and, without moving from his seat, began to draw in pencil what was before him: the long room in a series of rooms and, at the end, the table with the lamp and the objects therein. For hours he toiled, scratching, puncturing, tearing the sheets of paper, until he achieved, on the smallest space of paper available, the most satisfying result. The little girl, amazed, initially believed he didn't know how to get to the bottom of it, but soon, struck by his concentration, she understood that art could be a game superior to virtuosity. Watching him do everything in his gestures, with restless eye and hand, I dreamed of a Giacometti... who drew Giacometti while he drew.Painting and sculpture, the two parallel and complementary activities, are founded for him on the necessity of drawing. "Whether it's painting or sculpture," he states, "what must be said, what I believe, is that ultimately only drawing matters. One must rely solely, exclusively on drawing. If one had a little mastery of drawing, everything else would be possible". In dem Bestreben, Zeichnung für Zeichnung zu entsprechen, nahm Giacometti das Notizbuch und begann, ohne sich von seinem Platz zu rühren, mit Bleistift zu zeichnen, was vor ihm lag: den langen Raum in einer Reihe von Räumen und am Ende den Tisch mit der Lampe und den darauf befindlichen Gegenständen. Stundenlang schuftete er, kratzte, stach, zerriss die Blätter, bis er auf dem kleinsten verfügbaren Platz das befriedigendste Ergebnis erzielte. Das kleine Mädchen, erstaunt, glaubte zunächst, er wüsste nicht, wie er der Sache auf den Grund gehen sollte, doch bald, beeindruckt von seiner Konzentration, verstand sie, dass Kunst ein Spiel sein konnte, das der Virtuosität überlegen war. Als ich ihm dabei zusah, wie er alles in seinen Gesten tat, mit unruhigem Auge und unruhiger Hand, träumte ich von einem Giacometti … der Giacometti zeichnete, während er zeichnete.Malerei und Bildhauerei, diese beiden parallelen und sich ergänzenden Tätigkeiten, gründen für ihn auf der Notwendigkeit des Zeichnens. „Ob Malerei oder Bildhauerei“, erklärt er, „was gesagt werden muss, was ich glaube, ist, dass letztlich nur das Zeichnen zählt. Man muss sich einzig und allein auf das Zeichnen verlassen. Hätte man ein wenig Beherrschung des Zeichnens, wäre alles andere möglich.“ Dies ist das Bekenntnis der klassischen Tradition, wonach das Zeichnen die gemeinsame Quelle und Grundlage aller visuellen Handlungen war.___Das Angebot bezieht sich auf die authentische Lithografie wie beschrieben, in der Originalmappe.
