Hiroshi Sugimoto, Hiroshi Sugimoto (Ostfildern, 2005), pp. 313-331 Note In order to make the series Colors of Shadow - which includes Hiroshi Sugimoto's first photographs executed in color - he carefully devised a system of angled walls within a hilltop apartment in Tokyo. After coating each wall with a traditional Japanese plaster, or shikkui, which absorbs and reflects light evenly, he documented the subtle shifts of color and saturation that constantly played across their surfaces. Not only are the resulting images quiet and understated, but they also exhibit a dramatic tonal range that emerged from Sugimoto's manipulation of the most basic tenets of photography: light and shadow.
