Footnotes: Provenance Gift of the photographer to the present owner in 2008 Note Carolee Schneemann is celebrated for her pivotal contributions to the fields of painting, photography, performance, and installation art. Initially emerging as an abstract expressionist painter in the 1950s, her education in poetry and philosophy laid the groundwork for her to broaden the reach of her work. After relocating to New York City, Schneemann became involved with influential avant-garde collectives, Fluxus Happenings, and pioneering theater groups, which helped solidify her reputation as a trailblazing feminist artist. As she used her work to boldly confront the social constructs surrounding the female body, sexuality, and gender, photography became the essential vehicle for her explorations. Schneemann's legendary performances were filmed or photographed, thus preserving her incendiary, thought-provoking live works. The resulting images were carefully compiled and then thoughtfully reproduced and reissued in the 21st century. Long overshadowed by her male peers during the 1960s and 1970s, Schneemann has now begun to receive recognition for her significant contributions to feminist theory and experimental art.
