Youssef Nabil, Youssef Nabil: Once Upon a Dream (Venice: Palazzo Grassi, 2020), pp. 96-101 Note Influenced by his exposure to early Egyptian cinema during his childhood, Youssef Nabil's signature hand-colored photographs take inspiration from the distinctive look of Technicolor films. In the early 1990s, he learned hand-coloring techniques from the last working film retouchers in Cairo and Alexandria. In works such as the present lot, Nabil tints a gelatin silver print with various materials - including watercolor, oil, pencil, and charcoal - to create ethereal compositions that recall the Arabian-Hollywood glamour of classic movies. You Never Left #XII showcases his signature blue color that is reminiscent of the vibrant Mediterranean Sea.
