Footnotes: Provenance The Sierra Club Archive Scott Nichols Gallery, Sonoma iGavel Auctions, 29 October 2020, Lot 5846456 Acquired from the above by the present owner Note In the early 1920s, the Curry Company, which managed accommodations and services in Yosemite National Park, sought to promote tourism in the area. They hired the young naturalist, Ansel Adams, to create a series of photographs showcasing the beauty of Yosemite. Their aim was to use Adams' striking imagery to enhance the company's promotional materials, including brochures and advertisements, thus attracting more visitors to the park. The partnership and commission were both extraordinarily successful: Yosemite was popularized as a premiere destination, and Adams's images increased his photographic reach. The project is emblematic of the symbiotic relationship between Adams, the park, and his early conservation efforts. The partnership between Adams and the Curry Company continued, and he subsequently supplied images for their promotional material for years to come.
