The figure seated on a rustic stump, his left leg raised, on circular base, the rear with circular hole originally for a rotating handle, 38cm high, 23cm wide, 20cm deep approximately Footnotes: Also known as the Boy with Thorn or Boy Pulling a Thorn from His Foot, The Spinario depicts a young boy in the act of removing a thorn from his foot. Though it reflects a particularly naturalism and emotional detail typical of Hellenistic art, it is generally considered Roman in origin, dating to the third century BCE and likely based on a lost Greek original. The work was widely reproduced in both bronze and marble during the Roman period, highlighting its lasting appeal and the Roman admiration for Greek models. It was rediscovered during the Renaissance period and became one of the earliest Roman sculptures to inspire artists. Its realistic form and subdued expressiveness influenced many artists and sculptors including Michelangelo and it played a role in shaping Renaissance ideas about classical art. The sculpture remains a powerful example of how Greek artistic traditions were preserved, adapted, and revived across time. Literature F. Haskell and N.
