
A pair of Regency bronzed plaster figural torcheres formed as Vestal Virgins, mounted on faux marble painted wood pedestals Circa 1810, the figures in the manner of Francis Hardenberg (Anglo-German, fl. 1783-1832) The shrouded female figures each holding a votive basin containing a sconce, raised on integral simulated verde antico marble shallow square plinths, the stepped square panelled pedestals, with concealed castors, The figures: 137 cm high, 38cm wide, 40cm deep; the pedestals: 102 cm high, 43cm wide, 59cm deep (4) Footnotes: This pair of Roman vestal statues, characterized by their veil-draped figures and lamps, executed in a trompe l'oeil stone finish, aligns with the design of 'Vestal with Lamp' provided in 1800 by Francis Hardenberg (d. 1832), a 'Petrification Manufacturer' based in Mount Street, for Burghley House in Lincolnshire. This arrangement was first documented in the Guidebook published in 1815 (refer to Country House Lighting: Temple Newsam House Exhibition, 1992, no. 118). Additionally, an identical pair of cream-painted figures was auctioned from Fasque, the Scottish estate of the Gladstone family, by Christie's London on May 7, 2008, lot 20 for £27,500, inclusive of the premium for a set of four.
