A set of three late 19th century leaded and painted stained glass window panels depicting depicting The Crucifixion together with two early 20th century windows depicting scenes from Christ and the Children and two other unrelated fragmentary glass panels The first three window panels perhaps attributable to Lavers, Barraud & Westlake from a design by Nathaniel H. J. Westlake FSA or Clayton & Bell and removed from St George's Perry Hill Church, Forest Hill, South East London (demolished 1999) where they were originally set into the East window, circa 1881, the other two window panels, probably attributable to A. O. Hemming & Co. & Co, possibly from the South Aisle, the central panel, circa 1911, the other panel, circa 1918 The set of three panels of twin sectional form, the larger upper sections with triple arched lancet tops, the central panel depicting Christ on the cross, flanked on left by the 'bad thief' Gestas and to the right by the 'good thief' Dimas, all beneath crocketed architectural devices, the figures below the scene including the Virgin Mary, St John and Mary Magdalene , the lower panels with corresponding crocketed decoration above dedication texts, reading from the left to the right hand panel Temporary Church built with nominal district 1871 * Rev. J. Monk MA Vicar Designated, This window presented by James Clegg * W R Bell? And Julie his wife, AD 1880, and Permanent Church consecrated and District Assigned 1880, Revd D. Narding M A? first Vicar, the two windows, apparently from a larger set of three panels, the central panel dating from circa 1911, side panels (one apparently lacking) from 1918, of similarly shaped twin sectional form, the part scene depicting Christ (presumably the central panel) and figures of mothers, children and the disciples (presumably one of the side panels) within a naturalistic setting, together with two odd and unrelated fragmentary pieces, one possibly depicting the headless figure of St John the Evangelist (with eagle) possibly by Sir J. Ninian Comper, the original positions for these pieces within the old church unclear, the set of three windows comprising three upper arched rectangular panels, each 152cm high, 50cm wide, and three lower rectangular panels, each 36cm high, 50cm wide (each complete window, 188cm high, 50cm wide), the pair of windows comprising two upper arched panels, each 99cm high, 50cm wide, and two lower rectangular panels, each 37cm high, 50cm wide (each complete window, 136cm high, 50cm wide), the two odd fragments, 62cm, high, 47cm wide, and 42cm high, 47cm wide (12 ) Footnotes: St George's Perry Hill Church was designed by the architect William C Banks and originally constructed between 1878 and 1880. It served the local community for over a century before severe structural settlement on low lying ground necessitated its demolition in 1999. The painter, illustrator, and designer Henry Holiday (1839-1927), associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement and a former chief designer at James Powell and Sons, made a significant contribution to the glazing scheme at St George's, with designs dating from 1880 and later additions of 1912 and 1918, almost certainly executed at his independent Hampstead workshop after leaving Powell in 1891. While the church contained stained glass by other makers and designers, all of Holiday's work-including the rose window-was salvaged and incorporated into the new building opened in 2005, reflecting his considerable reputation and influence in contemporary artistic circles at the time.
