Footnotes: Both Oxford and Cambridge have many college boat crews, and the Bumps races are an inter-college tournament. Oxford and Cambridge have their races separately, but traditionally from these a university eight is selected to represent them in the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race (established in 1829). The picture scene shows the college barges (boathouses) and rafts/punt on the left with the university boathouse across the river. These floating barges served as college clubhouses with changing rooms, lounges, observation deck, boat storage and launching raft.
