
A large engraved Nelson and Warren commemorative rummer, circa 1805-10 The generous ovoid bowl decorated to one side with a bacchanalian figure sat astride barrel, glasses of wine raised in both of his hands, flanked by fruiting vine, the other reserved with a roundel inscribed with the initials 'JG', a fouled anchor below, the rim inscribed 'NELSON AND WARREN FOREVER', resting on a collar above a square pedestal stem and foot, 20.8cm high Footnotes: It is likely that the Warren commemorated on this rummer is Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren, who defeated a French invasion fleet off the coast of Ireland. The popular naval song 'Nelson and the Navy', written by Charles Dibdin to celebrate the successes of the English against the French in Egypt and the Mediterranean, is also sometimes known as 'Nelson and Warren'.
