
A rare engraved ballooning wine glass, the glass 18th century, the engraving circa 1811 The tall ogee bowl decorated in diamond-point with two figures ascending in a hot air balloon, both holding flags over the edge of the basket, the reverse inscribed 'THE BALLOON OF/ MR SADLER/ AERONAUT', on a plain stem and conical foot, 17.6cm high Footnotes: James Sadler (1753-1828) was a pioneering English aeronaut, chemist, and pastry chef from Oxford, widely acknowledged as the first Englishman to make a manned balloon flight. On 4 October 1784 he completed a successful ascent from Christ Church Meadow in Oxford, rising to 3,600 feet. The scene on the present lot depicts a later ascent, taken from an original source print showing James Sadler and Captain Paget of the British Royal Navy ascending in a balloon decorated in honour of the Prince Regent's birthday from the Mermaid Tavern gardens in Hackney, London, on 12 August 1811.
