
An engraved 'King of Prussia' opaque twist portrait wine glass, circa 1760 The ogee bowl with a half-length profile portrait bust of Frederick the Great within an oval frame, inscribed 'SUCCESS TO THE KING/ OF PRUSSIA' below the rim, on a double-series stem with pair of heavy opaque white spiral tapes around a vertical gauze, over a conical foot, 15cm high Footnotes: The inscription refers to King Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), popularly known as Frederick the Great, who was the nephew of King George II. The present lot probably celebrates the Seven Years War (1756-1763) in which Great Britain and Prussia were in alliance against Saxony, France and Russia. Frederick's many military achievements meant that he was almost more popular in England than King George himself, with toasts drunk to the Prussian Hero throughout the country.
