At the battle of Trafalgar the two attacking lines of the British fleet were led by Horatio Nelson on H.M.S. Victory and Cuthbert Collingwood aboard H.M.S. Royal Sovereign. The latter's hull, recently coppered, moved more swiftly and broke the enemy line first. Upon seeing this Nelson reportedly pointed at Royal Sovereign, announcing 'See how that noble fellow Collingwood carries his ship into action!' Nelson and Collingwood enjoyed a long friendship, first meeting as young midshipmen in 1773. When Collingwood died in 1810, he was buried close to Nelson in St Paul's Cathedral.
