A Hollins felspathic stoneware porter mug and jug and a similar jug, circa 1797-10 The engine-turned rims picked out in rich brown glaze, a distinctive textured ground with sprigged decoration, the mug with Nelson crowned by Neptune riding a chariot drawn by Hippocampi, flanked by two trees, 12.7cm high, impressed mark T&J HOLLINS, the jug with Britannia sending Fame forth to crown Nelson who holds a speaking trumpet and is surrounded by military trophies, a flowering rose bush nearby and a ship of the line in full sail below the spout, 16.6cm high, the larger jug with deep blue glaze about the neck and top of the elaborate handle, the figure of Nelson within a laurel wreath under the spout, flanked by the hands of friendship, seated Britannia attended by soldiers, and a ship in full sail, 20.2cm high (3) Footnotes: Provenance Bonhams, Nelson and the Navy, 24 October 2024, lot 58. Nelson is depicted with both of his arms intact on the porter mug, perhaps indicating an earlier date or simply a little artistic licence. The standing figure of Nelson on both jugs shows the more familiar image with his vacant right sleeve pinned to his waistcoat. Stoneware marked for Thomas and John Hollins is rare. The smaller jug is undoubtedly from the same source as the porter mug. An almost identical jug with an impressed mark from the Gibb Collection was sold by Dreweatt Neate, 26 March 1997.
