
English school, circa 1785, portrait miniature of an officer, traditionally identified as John Gregoire of the Gardes du Rois of Louis XVIII together with three other portrait miniatures all also traditionally identified as members of the Gregoire family, two attributed to Diana Hill, née Dietz (English, 1760-1844), the other probably French school, late 18th century All oval, on ivory, the first depicted wearing the Grand Cross Legion of Honour and other orders, with powdered wig and blue uniform with red collar and white cravat, the gilt metal frame with an elaborate hair arrangement keepsake to the reverse, the two miniatures attributed to Diana Hill depicting two different female sitters, the first traditionally thought to of a lady called Susan Gregoire - née Christian, with powdered curled hair and brown eyes wearing a white dress with blue sash, apparently signed (faintly) to the bottom right side, the second also apparently depicting Susan Gregoire, but apparently depicting a different sitter with fair curled hair and brown eyes wearing a pink dress, the last depicting a gentleman traditionally thought to George Gregoire II (French, 1758-1822), skipper of Dunkirk and husband of Susan Gregoire, the first, 5.3cm x 4.5cm, the second, 5.8cm x 4.7cm, the third, 5.7cm x 5.6cm, the last, 6cm x 4.7cm (not including frames) (4) Footnotes: The sitter John Gregoire is thought to have been the second son of David Gregoire of Dunkirk. Diana Hill, née Dietz (English, 1760-1844) was an English miniaturist widowed with two young children who moved from London to Calcutta in 1786. She specialised in painting portraits of Europeans.
