Dates to 1897. Referred to as a standard model conehammer. This example features the factory blue finish, 23 groove walnut grips, lanyard loop, 50-500 rear sight, Mauser Oberndorf legend and proofs and fire blue long extractor and rear sight slide. All external visible numbers are matching. This is the same type and era as the two C-96 pistols purchased by Churchill and used in the Boer War that was fought in South Africa from October 11, 1899 until May 31, 1902. Working as a war correspondent, he was captured by Boer forces on November 15, 1899. He also possessed a C96 during the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Comes with an excellent wood shoulder stock holster numbered 2588. CONDITION: Excellent. Metal retains at least 95% blue with some normal high edge wear. There are a couple small rub areas on left side of magazine well. Strong nitre blue. All legends are crisp. Grips are fine. Mechanically sound. Bore is bold with some frosting.
