Description
This is a tin-edged incense box, with a surface coated in pear skin lacquer, inlaid with tin plates and mother-of-pearl, and adorned with raised maki-e (gold lacquer) hydrangea patterns.
The tin-edged incense box (Suzubuchi KObako) is an elegant and sturdy lacquerware incense box, with the connection between the lid and the body wrapped in tin plates. This design was popular from the Muromachi period to the Edo period, primarily used as a tea ceremony utensil (incense box) for holding fragrant wood or kneaded incense. Its characteristic is the contrast between maki-e (gold lacquer) and tin.
The craftsmanship of the hydrangea and leaves is extremely delicate, employing techniques such as tin plate appliquE, maki-e (gold lacquer) decoration, and mother-of-pearl inlay, giving each part a distinct appearance.
It comes with its original packaging box.
