Title: Painted Tramp Art Frame by John Zubersky Sunflowers
Description: Tramp art frame with sunflower corners and points surround attributed to John Martin Zubersky. The frame exhibits carved decorative flourishes on the top interior layer that is unique to his work. Heavily detailed and in very good shape with one of the points on the top right pedals missing a portion of the tip, and scratches to the mirror. It has a painted surface. Zubersky made these extraordinarily complex tramp art frames entirely out of wooden cigar boxes. His trademark style combines expressive sunflower corners and deeply layered rows with each layer having a different carving style. This example is probably one of the earliest examples known with unique elements as he was working out his signature design. We have added a newly discovered photograph of John Martin Zubersky with his wife Anna taken in the 1930s. Similar examples are illustrated in Tramp Art Another Notch on pages 33 – 34, 268 – 269 and in A Legacy in Tramp Art on pages 88-91. The frame dates to 1912 – 1920.
