This floor-standing sculpture belongs to Béjar’s well-known Magiscope series, a body of work that brought together salvaged mechanical parts and optical elements in playful, almost instrument-like constructions. The circular head and tall shaft give the piece the look of a viewing device or scientific apparatus, while the lens surface creates shifting visual effects as the viewer moves around it. It is a good example of the inventive mix of industry, design, and illusion that made the Magiscopes one of the artist’s most recognizable forms.
