Description
EDWARD WESTON (American, 1886-1958), negative
COLE WESTON (American, 1919-2003), print
Shell, 1927
gelatin silver print, printed later from the original negative
verso stamped: "Negative by Edward Weston / Print by Cole Weston"
9.25 x 7 in. (23.5 x 17.8 cm) sight; 16.25 x 20.5 in. (41.3 x 52.1 cm) framed
A gelatin silver print of a nautilus shell, printed by Cole Weston from an original negative by his father Edward Weston. The composition fills the frame with the shell's spiral form, rendered with the tonal precision and formal intensity that defined Weston's approach to close-up natural subjects. Edward Weston first photographed shells in the 1920s, and the resulting images became among the most celebrated works in the history of American photography. This print was made posthumously by Cole Weston (1919-2003), Edward's youngest son, who was authorized to produce prints from his father's original negatives and identified each print with the "Negative by / Print by" backstamp shown on the verso. Edward Weston (1886-1958) is widely regarded as one of the preeminent photographers of the twentieth century, and a founding figure of the Group f/64 movement in California.
