Description
Subject & Medium
Presenting a rare, British “palace sentry” style indoor post box, handcrafted from solid mahogany with a rich deep-brown tone and an attractive, naturally matured patina. Influenced by Arts & Crafts design values—honest materials, practical form, restrained detailing—this piece is both decorative and functional.
Circa: Mid–20th Century.
Composition & Technique
Shaped as a classic sentry/guard box, it features a pitched roof top, reeded pedestal base, and carved panel detailing that provides depth without excessive ornamentation. Practical details include a front-mounted brass fixture, a secure lockable front panel door, a top posting slot, and a charming pull-out drawer with brass handle at the base—ideal for keys, stamps, or small stationery.
The solid mahogany construction gives reassuring weight and warmth, with a glowing natural finish that highlights the grain and patina earned over decades. Later-added hinges and minor historic repairs are present and blend sympathetically, preserving both utility and character.
Posting slot opening: 11.9 cm wide x 0.4 cm high.
Includes working brass lock and key.
Historical Note
Items of this type were often used in the main hall, study, or office of substantial homes as an elegant family post collection point—part utility, part interior statement piece, and now increasingly sought after for decorative display.
