Description
A finely cast early 20th century solid bronze model of a long-haired Dachshund (Teckel), captured mid-stride with its head lifted in an alert, attentive pose. Though modest in scale, the sculpture has real presence, with confident anatomical modelling and beautifully worked surface detail that reflects the Austro-German animalier tradition of the period.
This is a characterful cabinet bronze that balances naturalism with decorative charm.
In the Manner of Franz Xaver Bergman
Offered in the manner of Franz Xaver Bergman of Vienna, this piece sits comfortably within the broader Central European bronze tradition of circa 1900. While it does not bear the Bergman foundry “B” mark and is unsigned, it shares the expressive stance and animated quality associated with Viennese bronze production.
The slightly lifted muzzle, attentive gaze and forward stepping posture give the sculpture vitality. Unlike many classic Vienna bronzes which were cold-painted, this example carries a deep, naturalistic brown-black patina, enhancing its sculptural quality and making it particularly suited to traditional interiors.
Size & Weight
Length: 10.5 cm
Height: 6.3 cm
Width: 3.3 cm
Weight: approximately 400 grams
The substantial weight relative to its compact dimensions confirms solid casting rather than hollow construction. It feels reassuringly dense in the hand and stable when displayed.
Its scale makes it ideal for a desk, collector’s cabinet, bookshelf or library table.
Craftsmanship & Surface
The bronze is consistent with lost-wax casting, with subtle surface flow and integrated modelling rather than heavily chased post-cast detail. The fur texture is worked into the form with care, especially along the feathered ears, chest and ribcage.
The patina is deep and layered, showing warm undertones in recesses and gentle age-related rubbing on raised areas such as the muzzle, shoulders and flank. Minor verdigris traces within creases support age and authenticity.
The underside shows workshop finishing typical of small cabinet bronzes of the early 20th century.
Subject & Modelling
The Dachshund, or Teckel, was a particularly popular subject in Germany and Austria around 1900. This example captures the defining characteristics of the long-haired variety: the elongated, low-slung body, deep chest, short sturdy legs, pendulous feathered ears and alert expression.
Despite its compact scale, the sculpture successfully conveys movement and personality, avoiding stiffness and achieving a lively, engaging presence.
Provenance
From the collection of an Eastern Shire fine art dealer and subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
This provenance adds confidence in its authenticity and reflects careful selection within a professional dealing context.
Condition
Very good antique condition overall. The patina remains attractive and consistent, with light surface wear commensurate with age. There are no visible repairs, cracks or structural issues. It presents cleanly and is ready to display.
