Artist: Eugene Leslie Smyth (American, 1857-1932). Title: Landscape with Trees. Signed and dated lower right. Dimensions: 12" x 16". Framed: 16 1/2" x 20 1/2".Eugene Leslie Smythe was born in New York in 1857 and spent his early years in New England. He entered Brown University in 1876 before turning fully to painting. His artistic training included study with Francis Davis Millet in 1875, followed by work with George Inness (1884–85), and later R. U. Shurleff and D. W. Tryon (1885–86), grounding him in both Impressionist and Tonalist traditions. He first exhibited in 1883 at the Brooklyn Art Association and soon established a steady exhibition record. Smythe showed regularly at the Boston Art Club from 1885 to 1900, winning second prize in 1885 and first prize in 1888. Like many artists of his time, he supplemented his income through illustration work between 1900 and 1905. Smythe eventually settled in Providence, where he developed the landscape style for which he is best known. He focused on coastal and rural New England subjects, using a controlled palette to capture shifting light and seasonal atmosphere, with a particular sensitivity to spring and autumn tones. He was also associated with the Tilden-Thurber Company as a staff expert in oil painting. Although based in Rhode Island, Smythe maintained ties to Vermont, where he painted regularly and later spent extended periods. He also traveled to California in the early 1890s, painting in the Sierra Madre mountains and later publishing and illustrating Missions of California (1899). His work is included in the Santa Fe Railway Collection.
