Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1980s on double-weight semi-matte paper 48.7 x 59 cm, in very good condition. Signed "Bob Lebeck" and titled in pencil on the reverse.
The sword thief of Léopoldville was taken by Robert Lebeck on June 29, 1960, one day before Congo gained independence from Belgium. The photo shows a Congolese man – later identified as Ambroise Boimbo (1930–1981) – shortly after he stole the ceremonial sword of Baudouin, King of the Belgians, from the moving limousine. The image appeared in several international magazines and the German magazine Kristall, with which Lebeck had a contract, devoted an extensive photo reportage to the event, presenting it as a symbol of the turmoil that broke out in the Congo shortly after independence and its causes. The photo later became a symbol of the decolonization of Africa.

Der Schwertdieb von Léopoldville wurde am 29. Juni 1960 von Robert Lebeck aufgenommen, einen Tag bevor der Kongo seine Unabhängigkeit von Belgien erlangte. Das Foto zeigt Ambroise Boimbo (1930–1981) kurz nachdem er das Zeremonialschwert von König Baudouin von Belgien aus der fahrenden Limousine gestohlen hatte. Das Bild erschien in mehreren internationalen Magazinen, und die deutsche Zeitschrift Kristall, für die Lebeck einen Vertrag hatte, widmete dem Ereignis eine ausführliche Fotoreportage. Sie präsentierte es als Symbol für die Unruhen, die kurz nach der Unabhängigkeit im Kongo ausbrachen, und deren Ursachen. Später wurde das Foto zu einem Symbol der Dekolonisierung Afrikas.
