Description
Pastoral Landscapes: Rare Castelli Maiolica Trembleuse Cup and Saucer,
Mid-18th Century
A rare and exquisite Italian Maiolica "Trembleuse" cup and saucer, produced in the famous ceramic center of Castelli (Abruzzo) during the mid-18th century.
The set is painted in the characteristic soft, earthy palette of the region, featuring delicate pastoral landscapes populated by figures and classical ruins.
The Cup: Depicts two figures"”a seated woman in blue and yellow and a standing companion"”conversing amidst lush trees and a prominent classical column or ruin.
The Saucer: Features a sweeping landscape with large, wind-swept trees, distant architectural ruins, and birds in flight against a pale blue sky.
The saucer is modeled in the "Trembleuse" form, distinguished by a deep central well (or gallery) designed to hold the cup securely. This clever design prevented spillage, allowing the user to enjoy expensive beverages like hot chocolate while in bed or with unsteady hands.
Measurements:
Overall Height: 3 3/4 (9.53cm).
Saucer Diameter: 6 3/4 inches (17.1 cm).
Cup Height: 2 3/4 inches (7 cm).
Condition: Good antique condition.
Historical Context:
Castelli Maiolica: In the 17th and 18th centuries, Castelli was one of Europe's premier centers for earthenware. Unlike the bold, bright colors of the Renaissance, 18th-century Castelli wares (often associated with the Grue and Gentili families) favored a refined, painterly style with subtle greens, ochres, and blues, treating the ceramic surface like a canvas.
The Trembleuse: The trembleuse cup was a status symbol of the 18th century, specifically associated with the ritual of drinking hot chocolate"”a luxury commodity at the time
