Description
This wonderful wooden hand carved standing weasel is signed, "A Crowe," on the weasel's right foot. The carving is attributed to Amanda Crowe one of the most recognized and important Eastern Cherokee woodcarvers. According to biographical information obtained from the Ashville Art Museum's website, she is attributed with training known artists such as Lloyd Owle, John Wilnoty, Bud Smith and most notably Virgil Ledford. Her works can be found in the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Museum, and other prominent collections. Besides having her work shown at various prestigious locations like the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C., and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, she was also the subject of a Google Doodle that appeared on their logo November 9, 2018.
This warm and charming piece was obtained from a high-end estate located in Oak Brook, Illinois. We know that Amada Crowe attended the Art Institute of Chicago and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the institution. However, we do not know when this piece was carved and have seen only one other very similar carved weasel featured in a collection purchased from the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutal by Indiana University's Mathers Museum of World Cultures. The weasel in the Mathers' collection was carved out of cherry wood and was on all fours. The article associated with the Mathers' collection indicates the weasel was likely made around 1970.
There are so many references and examples of Amanda Crowe's work and influence and it is worth researching her story and on your own. This piece is in very good vintage condition with a few very minor scrapes or scuffs. The weasel is carved out of one solid piece of wood, to include the tail, and was mounted on the thin block base. Please see photographs for an overall representation of condition.
