Description
Elegant Tableware: Chinese Export Famille Rose Porcelain Wine Cooler
Circa 1775
A finely potted and well-preserved Chinese Export porcelain vessel, functioning as either a wine cooler or a cachepot (ornamental flower pot), dating to the Qianlong period (c. 1775).
The circular body features a subtly ribbed or lobed form, lending it a gentle texture. It is hand-painted in vibrant Famille Rose enamels with two large, central bouquets of peonies and garden flowers, interspersed with smaller scattered floral sprigs.
The design is framed by a distinctively shaped, castellated (scalloped) rim, highlighted with a gilt spearhead border that repeats around the splayed foot. Two robust, reeded loop handles are applied to the sides, modeled after European silver or creamware shapes of the period, demonstrating the cross-cultural exchange typical of export wares.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Enamels remain bright with minimal rubbing. The gilt spearhead borders are well-preserved. No chips, cracks, or restoration.
Measurements:
Height: 6 1/4 inches (15.88 cm)
Width: 7 1/2 inches (19.0 cm)
Internal Diameter: 5 1/8 inches (13.03cm)
External Diameter: 6 inches (15.24cm)
Historical Context
In the late 18th century, "wine coolers" (or seau à bouteille) were essential components of grand dinner services, used to chill individual bottles of wine or liqueur at the table. The shape was often copied directly from European metalwork or soft-paste porcelain (like Sèvres). Today, these versatile pieces are highly sought after by collectors not only for their original purpose but as elegant containers for orchids or flowering plants.
