Art Deco Icons: Pair of Georg Jensen Silver "Skyscraper" Salt & Pepper Shakers by Jorgen Jensen,
Design #793,
Designed 1936
A sleek and sophisticated pair of sterling silver salt and pepper shakers by Georg Jensen, executed in the highly collectible "Skyscraper" pattern (Design No. 793). Designed in 1936 by Jørgen Jensen (Georg Jensen's second son), these shakers are masterworks of the late Art Deco and Functionalist style.
Each shaker features an impossibly slender, cylindrical column rising from a stepped square base. The base is detailed with a sharp, geometric zig-zag (chevron) border, adding a rhythmic architectural element that evokes the setbacks of 1930s skyscrapers. The tops are fitted with detachable pierced covers that maintain the streamlined profile.
Markings:
Maker's Mark: Impressed with the Georg Jensen dotted oval mark.
Origin/Purity: Stamped DENMARK and STERLING.
Design Number: Stamped 793.
Designer Mark: Marked DESSIN (Design) with Jørgen Jensen's signature mark (often described as a stylized "JJ" or double narrow triangle/lightning bolt).
Condition: Excellent vintage condition.
The set is accompanied by a gray cloth storage bag with a sewn label reading: "Georg Jensen / Inc. / Fifth Avenue / New York".
Measurements:
Height: 4 3/4 inches (12.1 cm)
Width (Base):: 7/8 inch (2.2 cm)
Depth (Base): 7/8 inch (2.2 cm)
Historical Context:
Jørgen Jensen (1895–1966) was the second son of the firm's founder, Georg Jensen. After training as a silversmith in Munich and operating his own workshop in Stockholm, he rejoined his father's company in 1936. The "Skyscraper" set (#793) was one of his first designs upon his return. His work from this period is celebrated for bridging the gap between the organic Art Nouveau style of his father and the severe Functionalism of Sigvard Bernadotte, resulting in objects that are both sculptural and strictly modern.
Design Date: The set was designed by Jørgen Jensen in 1936.
Production
Primary Production Period: The majority of these sets were executed between 1936 and 1944. Unlike widespread Georg Jensen patterns such as Acorn or Pyramid which were produced continuously for decades, the "Skyscraper" set is considered rare and was not mass-produced for a long duration. The specific hallmarks on this set (Georg Jensen & Wendel) typically date to the 1945–1951 period, aligning with the later, limited production run.
