Germany, circa 1899
An exceptional large pâte-sur-pâte/ phanolith Neoclassical nine draped figures in a highly detailed decorated court scene.
The decoration is executed in pâte-sur-pâte/ phanolith in white on green background, a style popularized by Wedgwood's Jasperware.
The porcelain sculptor Jean Baptist Stahl (1863-1940), inventor of the phanolith, created these creations using the pâte-sur-pâte technique. At the Paris World Exhibition around 1900, he was awarded the "Grand Prix" for such plates.
Signed J. Stahl, Lower left, of the charger. This work is fully singed and numbered, the back of the charger is stamped for shape number pattern number 2443, and Mettlach and VB for Villeroy & Boch.
