The collector, of Russian descent, was born in Harbin, China, in 1935. After the Second World War, her family moved to Shanghai, where they remained until 1952 before relocating to Hong Kong. The present items were acquired in Shanghai from private collections and art auctions during this period. When the family emigrated to the United States in the late 1950s, they brought the collection with them.
