The original version of this composition, painted in 1825 by William Etty (1787-1849) and exhibited at the Royal Academy the same year, is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. Rather than illustrating a particular incident from ancient history or epic poetry, the artist intended to contrast the terrifying brutality of the combat with the compassionate plea of the woman trying to intervene.
