Description
POSSIBLY SIGNED IN PENCIL (LOWER LEFT) - This is a James Gillray political cartoon titled Monstrous Craws, at a New Coalition Feast, an etching and aquatint published in London in 1787. National Portrait Gallery. Subject Matter: The caricature scathingly portrays King George III, Queen Charlotte, and the Prince of Wales ravenously consuming guineas (gold coins) from a bowl labeled "John Bull's Blood," symbolizing the royal family draining the public purse. Political Context: The print was created to criticize the exorbitant financial demands made by the British royal family during this period, particularly a parliamentary grant to pay off the Prince of Wales's debts. Symbolism: The figures are depicted with grossly swollen throats ("craws") filled with money, emphasizing excessive greed, while the Prince's pouch remains empty, suggesting the financial demands were insufficient to satisfy his debts. A similar etching sold for approximately £688 ($860) at auction in late 2018.
