Description
The image shows an architectural engraving titled "Elevation of the Hexastyle Peripteral Temple" (and its French translation, Elevation du Temple Hexastyle Periptère). Based on its style and inscriptions, this print is likely from an 18th or 19th-century architectural treatise. Specifically, similar engravings are found in: The Antiquities of Magna Graecia (1807) by William Wilkins, which features detailed elevations and plans of Greek temples, including those at Paestum. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (8th edition, circa 1860), where related figures were engraved by G. Aikman to illustrate classical architecture. The engraving depicts a Doric order temple with specific structural characteristics: Hexastyle: The facade features six columns across the front. Peripteral: A single row of columns (colonnade) completely surrounds the inner chamber (cella). Doric Order: The columns have simple, unadorned capitals and lack bases, resting directly on the stylobate (the top step of the platform). The entablature above them includes a frieze with alternating triglyphs (three-grooved blocks) and metopes (flat panels). This type of "hexastyle peripteral" design is characteristic of many famous Greek temples, such as the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens or the Second Temple of Hera (often formerly called the Temple of Neptune) at Paestum.
